Cal Baseball Defeats UC Santa Barbara, 4-2

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Cal came back from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning, and added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a Brett Munster home run, securing a 4-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears evened their record to 5-5, and the Gauchos dropped to 3-5. Cal had won the opening game of the series, 3-0, on Friday.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was junior right-hander Michael Cooper, who improved to 1-1, throwing a career-high 7.0 innings with eight hits, two runs, no walks and three strikeouts. Cal also received outstanding relief pitching from senior right-handers Jeremy Burchett (1.0 inning, no hits, one strikeout) and Alex Trafton (1.0 inning, one hit, no runs,). Trafton earned his second save of the season.

The losing pitcher for UC Santa Barbara was starter Brian Tracey (1-1), who threw 5.3 innings with seven hits, three runs, one walk and one strikeout. The Gauchos had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Alden Carrithers led off the game with a single and later scored on a RBI ground out by Chris Valaika. UCSB added another run in the top of the fifth on a RBI single by Brian Lee.

But, Cal was able to come back with three straight hits off of Tracey by freshman Charlie Cutler, senior Rob Nesbitt and senior Allen Craig in the fifth. Nesbitt knocked in an RBI single up the middle after Cutler had advanced to third on a passed ball, and the a Tracey balk. Nesbitt later scored on a Tracey wild pitch, and Craig scored on an RBI ground out by Josh Satin. Junior second baseman Munster gave the Bears a little more cushion in the seventh inning with his first collegiate home run; a shot to left field off of UCSB reliever Matt Wade.

Cal next hosts UC Santa Barbara in the third game of the three-game series, Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
