Cardinal Shuts Out UIC, 3-0

Palm Springs, Calif. - Stanford shut out University of Illinois-Chicago, 3-0, in the first of two games today at the Palm Springs Classic. Sophomore third baseman Michelle Smith slammed her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning. Senior pitcher Laura Severson threw a complete game for the Cardinal, striking out three batters and allowing only two hits.

The Cardinal started the game with two scoreless innings. In the bottom of the third, junior rightfielder Anna Beardman got on base with a single up the middle. Senior shortstop Lauren Lappin then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Beardman. Smith stepped up and knocked a home run over the centerfield fence to score Lappin. Stanford remained ahead, 3-0, through the rest of the game.

In seven innings, Severson struck out three batters, walked none and allowed only two hits. Smith was 1-3 at the plate, collecting two RBI. Lappin nabbed one run and one RBI for the Cardinal and Beardman was 1-3 with one run scored.

Stanford continues play today against No. 16 Baylor at 1:00pm.
