Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Jim Murphy drove in five runs, including his third home run of the season, and the Cougars came from behind on two occasions as Washington State outlasted UC Davis, 8-7, on the third day of the River City Classic Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

With the win the Cougars improve to 9-2 on the season, including a 3-0 mark so far this weekend. Co-host UC Davis falls to 7-5 on their 2006 campaign.

After a scoreless three innings, WSU finally got to Aggie starter Justin Fitzgerald in the fourth. With two outs and Travis Coulter on first, Jared Prince laced a double down the line in right, scoring Coulter. UC Davis answered in the bottom of the frame as Daniel Descalso led off with a double then scored on Lukas Kirby's sacrifice fly to center. A two-out double and single produced another run as UC Davis took a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth, Jim Murphy pushed the Cougars back on top with a deep, two-run home run over the left field fence, scoring Jeff Miller. The lead was short lived as the Aggies strung together three hits to score two runs for a 4-3 lead after five innings.

In the sixth the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs and it looked as thorough Fitzgerald may escape after two straight strikeouts. But Murphy cleared the bases with a double to right-center, giving WSU a 6-4 advantage.

The Aggies tied the score in the sixth before the Cougars pushed across another run on a bases-loaded balk by Aggie reliever Brad McAtee. Cougar leftfielder Jay Miller extended his hitting streak to 14 games dating back to last season with a double to lead off the inning.

In the ninth WSU added an insurance run courtesy of two wild pitches and two errors as Jay Miller scored after leading off with a single to center.

Cougar starter Mike Wagner worked five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out four. Matt Way came on to work the next three innings, allowing just one hit as he picked up his first win of the season. Travis Webb worked the ninth for his first save. Offensive, Murphy finished the day with five RBIs, while Jay Miller added two hits and tow runs scored.

UC Davis was led by Descalso and David Huffman with three hits each. McAtee, who worked the final three innings, suffered his first loss of the season after allowing two runs on two hits.

WSU concludes play at the River City Classic Sunday when it faces San Francisco. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Hornet Field.
