UCLA Women Edge Oregon, 66-65
Feb. 25, 2006
The Bruins earned a road sweep of the Oregon schools to close the regular season, defeating Oregon, 66-65, in MacArthur Court. Sophomore forward Lindsey Pluimer hit both free throws in a one-and-one situation with six seconds to play, giving UCLA a four-point lead, and UCLA held on for the victory. Pluimer finished with 17 points and five rebounds to tie for team-high scoring honors with Lisa Willis, who had 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
UCLA got off to a good start, taking an 8-3 lead after two and a half minutes behind the play of Lindsey Pluimer, who had five of her 13 first-half points during that time. Oregon came back to take its first lead of the half, 17-16, at 11:16 on a Kedzie Gunderson three-point shot. The Ducks built up their lead to 23-18 before the Bruins went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead. Lisa Willis sparked the run by taking a hard charge and then coming back on the other end with a floater that gave UCLA a 26-25 lead. UCLA went up 28-25 after Nikki Blue launched a pass from the three-point line all the way down the court to Noelle Quinn for a fast-break layup.
A Brandi Davis three-pointer with 1:27 left in the half tied the score at 30, but Ortal Oren answered with a three of her own at 0:49, and Pluimer made another jumper with 14 seconds remaining to give UCLA a 35-30 halftime lead.
In the second half, UCLA went up by eight at 44-36 with 14:39 to play on a Chinyere Ibekwe layup, but the Ducks went on an 11-3 run to close to within two at 49-47 with 9:57 to play. Carolyn Ganes keyed that run with nine points, including a three-pointer at the end of the run. Oren returned the favor, however, with a three at 8:33 to increase UCLA's lead to five, 52-47. The Bruins increased their lead to eight again, 59-51, after two consecutive baskets, but Oregon answered with a 6-0 run that pulled the Ducks to within two, 59-57, with 2:30 to play. A Blue layup at 2:01 increased UCLA's lead to four, 61-57, and Quinn hit a jumper just seconds after the Bruins nearly turned the ball over, and the Bruins' lead went up to six, 63-57 with 1:35 to play. Ganes, however, hit another three-pointer with 1:15 remaining, to keep Oregon in it.
Blue missed a jumper on UCLA's next possession and fouled Tamika Nurse on the rebound. The freshman hit both ends of the one-and-one to pull Oregon to within one. Quinn was fouled on a jump shot with 22 seconds left and hit the second of two free throws to make the score 64-62. Oregon regained possession and Nurse raced to the hoop with 16 seconds left and put up a wild layup that did not foul. Livingston was fouled on the rebound and missed the front end of a one-and-one. However, Willis grabbed the rebound and kicked it out to Blue. After UCLA called time-out, Livingston inbounded the ball with 11.8 seconds left and got the ball in to Quinn, who was fouled with 8.6 seconds on the clock. Quinn missed the front end of the one-and-one and pressured Chelsea Wagner on the rebound. Wagner traveled, giving UCLA possession once again. The Ducks sent Pluimer to the line for a one-and-one with six seconds left, and the sophomore forward calmly converted both shots to ice the win.
Blue and Quinn each scored nine points for the Bruins, with Blue adding eight assists and Quinn recording 11 rebounds. Oren provided eight points off the bench. Davis led Oregon with 15 points.
UCLA ends the regular season with a 17-10 record, 12-6 in the Pac-10. Oregon drops to 14-14, 5-13.
