Feb. 27, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Scott Loescher, Ray Blake and Luke Feist all placed in the top-five with wins this morning at the 2006 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships in Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University.
Loescher started the day by pinning Cal Poly's Ryan Williams, to advance to the consolation championship at 157 pounds. Loescher dropped a 7-2 decision against third-seeded and 16th-ranked Tony Hook of Oregon State to capture fourth place.
With the feel of the championship finals this morning, Blake, seeded second at 165 pounds, faced off against top-seeded Joey Bracamonte of Oregon in the consolation semifinals. Earlier this season, Bracamonte won a four-point decision in Reno and earlier this month, Blake won a two-point overtime decision. This morning, with an appearance in the third-place match on the line, Blake posted a 17-5 major decision over Bracamonte for the chance to earn an automatic bid to Nationals.
Then, in the consolation semifinals, Blake took on unseeded Johnny Nunez of Boise State and won by technical fall at the end of the match with an 18-2 score.
Feist lost his consolation semifinal match to start the day, but in the fifth-place match, sixth-seeded Feist pinned Oregon's Chet McBee in 2:02.
Tanner Gardner, who earned his NCAA spot last night with a win in the championship semifinals, will compete tonight in the finals against Cal Poly's Chad Mendes, as both wrestlers seek their first Pac-10 title. The final session, featuring all 10 finals and the awards ceremony will begin with the march of champions at 5:30 p.m. Wrestling will begin at 6 p.m. this evening.
