Jeff Hammerschmidt Named Outside Linebackers/Special Teams Coach
Feb. 27, 2006
Cardinal head coach Walt Harris today completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Jeff Hammerschmidt as the team's outside linebackers and special teams coach. Hammerschmidt, a two-time All-Pac-10 safety at Arizona, coached at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last season. He has coached on the collegiate level since graduating from Arizona in 1991.
'We had to replace four coaches from last year's staff and I'm very pleased with the personnel we were able to bring in,' said Harris. 'Jeff is obviously a talented, young coach who will play a key role on our staff as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach. He has put together an outstanding resume, was a great player in the Pac-10 Conference at Arizona and has proven to be a tremendous coach. We're very pleased to have him join our program,' he said.
Hammerschmidt was most recently the linebackers coach at Cal Poly SLO in 2005. He has also coached at the University of Montana, St. Mary's College, Indiana, Southern Utah and Arizona.
Hammerschmidt, who earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Arizona in 1991, was a four-year letter-winner (1987-90) and two-time All-Pac-10 selection as a defensive back for the Wildcats. He helped his team to two bowl games (1989 Insight Bowl, 1990 Aloha Bowl) and was selected to play in the Japan Bowl and Hula Bowl following his senior season. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams during their 1991 training camp and for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League in 1992 under head coach Jack Elway.
Hammerschmidt began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant under Dick Tomey in 1992 and '93. He was then named defensive backs coach in 1994 and '95 and helped the Wildcats lead the nation in passing defense in 1995.
In 1996 and '97, Hammerschmidt was the defensive coordinator at Southern Utah University. He also coached the defensive line, linebackers and punt team. Hammerschmidt spent the next two seasons (1998-99) at Indiana University coaching outside linebackers, defensive ends and special teams.
From there, Hammerschmidt coached at St. Mary's College for three years (2000-02) as the Gael's defensive coordinator, defensive line and linebackers coach before moving on to the University of Montana for two seasons. From 2003-04, Hammerschmidt was Montana's defensive coordinator and secondary coach.
Hammerschmidt, a San Diego native, graduated from Helix High School where he was chosen to the 100 all-time high school football players from the San Diego area by the San Diego Union Tribune. Hammerschmidt and his wife, Felicity, have one daughter, Bryn.
