Cardinal Suffers First Loss of Season to No. 9 Baylor
Feb. 28, 2006
Stanford suffered its first loss of the season as ninth-ranked Baylor handed the seventh-ranked Cardinal a 5-1 defeat in a match played at the San Francisco Tennis Club late Monday evening. The match was scheduled to be played at the Taube Tennis Center, but weather forced the match to be played at the indoor facility in San Francisco.
The Cardinal dropped to 6-1 on the season as the Bears won five of six singles matches to record the win. Doubles were not played. Stanford's only win came at No. 5 where Phil Kao defeated Vladimir Portnov 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Stanford had to juggle its lineup after KC Corkery, the team's No. 1 singles player, was unable to play due to injury. That pushed junior James Pade to the No. 1 position and placed him in a tough match against Lars Poerschke, the fourth-ranked singles player in the country. Poerschke won the match in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, giving Pade, ranked 89th in singles, his first dual match loss of the year.
At No. 2 singles, Cardinal freshman Matt Bruch, who is ranked 10th in singles, lost a tough, three-set match to Matija Zgaga, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Zgaga entered the match ranked 56th in the nation.
The Cardinal will take four doubles teams this weekend to compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament in La Jolla, CA., Mar. 3-5.
