No. 14 California Men's Tennis Defeats BYU 4-1

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team started their match against visiting BYU on Tuesday with singles because of threatening weather. Cal had a 3-1 lead before rain hit the Hellman Tennis Center. After a brief intermission, the Golden Bears won their final match notching a 4-1 win over the Cougars.
No. 47 senior Conor Niland continued his success on the singles court by defeating BYU's James Ludlow in an energized match. Niland easily skipped past Ludlow 6-0, in the first set, but struggled in the second as he fell 6-2. The native of Limerick, Ireland bounced back in the third set to seal the first position victory, 6-1.
In the second position junior Tyler Browne defeated Dominik Kaufhold in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Playing in the fifth position freshman Eoin Heavey disposed of Ivan Kokurin in two quick sets, 6-0, 6-2. Junior Daniel Sebescen secured the 4-1 victory for the Bears, with his 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over BYU's Christian Hand in the third position. The lone victory for the Cougars was Jose Luis Lechuga's victory over sophomore Ken Nakahara, 6-0, 2-6, 3-6 in the fifth position. The only match which did not finished was in the sixth position, junior John Pettit was squared against Jonathan Sanchez. Sanchez won the first set 6-3. The second set was tied at 5-5 when the rain hit.
The Bears will travel next to La Jolla on Friday to participate in the Pacific Coast Doubles. The tournament runs through Sunday.
