March 3, 2006

La Jolla, Calif. - Several members of the UCLA men's tennis team are competing at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club this week as part of the 117th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships.

Although rain interrupted much of the action Thursday, the Bruins were able to get several matches in before the delay. Jeremy Drean and Michael Look posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over SDSU's Eugenio Romero/Billy Timu in the round of 64. They were in a third set with USC's Jeff Kazarian/Kaes Van't Hof when play was halted.

UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and former Bruin Luben Pampoulov reached the round of 16 Thursday, posting a pair of victories in early-round action. They started the day with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Steven Forman/Donald Johnson in the round of 64. They followed it up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cal's Lennart Maack/Dean Wallace.

The Bruins' other team still alive in the tournament is the duo of freshman Haythem Abid and junior Chris Surapol. They began the day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UCSD's Brent Molden/Eric Rubens. Next up is a round of 32 match against Patrick Briaud/Tyler Browne.

After receiving a first-round bye, UCLA's Jaysen Chung and Jason Nguyen were beaten in the round of 64 by Brian Morton/Per Nilsson, 6-2, 7-6(8).
