No. 1 Stanford Slides Past Sun Devils In The Rain, 4-0

Palo Alto, Calif. - Playing through heavy rain storms in Palo Alto, the No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils fell to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal, 4-0, in a match shortened by the rain. Forgoing the doubles competition due to the inclement weather, four matches were completed before the Pac-10 conference match was halted after the Cardinal (12-0, 3-0) had won the necessary four points, handing the Sun Devils (6-3, 0-3) their third straight loss.
Junior Sabrina Capannolo (Las Vegas, Nev.) fell in the number one spot for the Sun Devils. Capannolo, ranked 65 by the ITA, fell to No. 9-ranked Amber Liu, 6-3, 6-2. No. 93 Kady Pooler (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) also lost in the number two spot to No. 8 Alice Barnes, 6-0, 6-1. The Cardinal clinched the match as No. 14 Anne Yelsey defeated Wendy Pilecka (Pribram, Czech Republic) in the fourth spot (6-1, 6-2) and No. 35 Celia Durkin defeated Jessica Leitch (6-1, 6-3) in the sixth spot (6-1, 6-3) to clinch the match with four points.
Junior Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa) defeated No. 11 Theresa Logar in the first set, 7-6 (7), but the match was called in the second set due to weather. No. 50 Rebecca Rankin (Purley, England) also had her match against No. 64 Whitney Deason called in the second set, after dropping the first, 6-4.
The Sun Devils will try to rebound on Saturday as they search for that elusive first conference win in Berkeley when they take on the No. 8 California Golden Bears. ASU returns home on Tuesday to face No. 20 Wake Forest at the Whiteman Center at 1:30 p.m. MST.
