Seniors/Sophomores Row to Class Victory

The UCLA women's rowing team opened its 2006 season with an exciting day of intra-squad competition on March 4th. The senior/sophomore squad pulled out a win over the juniors who placed a close second. The event attracted a large number of family and friends who cheered on the Bruins as they battled for class bragging rights.
In the first heat of the day, the seniors/sophomores competed against a young freshman 'A' team. Showing their strength and experience, the seniors/sophomores got out to an early lead and never looked back. The second heat showcased a talented junior squad and the freshmen 'B' team. In a similar race to heat one, the juniors cruised to victory on the 1500m course.
In the petite final, the slightly more experienced freshman 'A' team was able to pull out a victory against their freshman counterparts. The grand final was the closest race of the day with the seniors/sophomores eventually pulling ahead of the juniors for the win.
The parent/alumni day also featured a race between UCLA alumni and the varsity eight. Representing the alumni were many stand-out rowers including Jessica Rogers (stroke), Lauren Hamann, Kristin Bixel, Monica Grova, Kelsey Hicks, Brooke Jordan, Dawn Regan, Irene Condella, and Emina Ong (cox). The outstanding alumni squad was outdone by the varsity eight who found open water early and cruised to a clean victory.
The varsiy eight lineup was as follows:Varsity Eight: Liz Pallas-Jacobs (stroke), Jessica Fritz, Vanessa Teff, Patricia Dudziec, Elizabeth Lee, Erin Haggerty, Erin Rice, Leah Wachtel, Kirsten Potenza (cox).

Looking ahead -- The Bruins will open the regular season next Saturday, March 11th when they host LMU.
