March 4, 2006

Raleigh, N.C. - The UCLA baseball team used clutch pitching to hold No. 17 NC State in check in the eighth and ninth inning and hang on to a 5-4 win over the Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon at Doak Field. The win improves UCLA to 8-9 on the season, while NC State falls to 13-3.

Freshman Brandon Crawford led the way for the Bruins going 4-for-4 with a triple, a two-run home run, and two runs scored. Senior Chris Jensen went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.

Junior Dave Huff (2-2) went 7.1 innings with three strikeouts to earn his second win of the season, and junior Paul Oseguera tossed 0.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth inning for his second-consecutive save.

UCLA got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Crawford drilled a leadoff triple down the right field line and then scored on a wild pitch by NC State starter Gib Hobson to put the Bruins up 1-0.

NC State answered in the bottom of the first inning with a RBI single by Brian Aragon to score Matt Camp from third base and tie the game at 1-1.

Huff pitched himself out of a jam in the third inning after giving up two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out. Huff struck out Ramon Corona and then struck out Matt Mangini on three pitches to end the Wolfpack threat.

The Bruins put together a two-out rally to score four runs in the fifth inning and go up 5-1 on the Wolfpack. Freshman Ryan Babineau singled to center field to get things going, followed by a two-run home run to right field by Crawford, his first of the season. Freshman Jermaine Curtis kept the momentum going with a double down the left field line, and senior Chris Jensen followed with a two-run bomb to right center to pick up Curtis.

NC State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Aaron Bates to open the inning, and a ground out to second base by Mangini to score Aragon from third to cut the UCLA lead to 5-3.

The Wolfpack cut the Bruins' lead to 5-4 in the seventh inning on a RBI single to center field by Mangini to score Aragon from second base with two outs. Huff then pitched his way out of another bases loaded jam by striking out Caleb Mangum to end the inning.

NC State had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning after Matt Camp singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error by senior Anthony Norman. Senior Josh Roenicke then came in from center field to relieve Huff and picked off Camp at second base for the second out of the inning. After walking Bates, Roenicke got pinch hitter Jeremy Synan to ground out to second base to end the inning.

Oseguera faced the last two NC State batters in the ninth inning, striking out Mangini and Matt Payne to seal the deal.

UCLA and NC State will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
