#12 Softball Knocks Off UNLV 4-2 in Day Two of UNLV Invitational

March 5, 2006

Las Vegas, Nev. - The 2006 UNLV rolled on Saturday as ASU took on the host-team UNLV in the second of their double-header where the Devils were able to defeat the UNLV Rebels 4-2 as ASU grabbed win number 20 on the season.

In the first, the Devils threatened with a bunt single from Jackie Vasquez, who was advanced by an error by UNLV, though the Devils couldn't capitalize as two strikeouts and a ground out left both Vasquez and Cochran on-base.

The Devils also kept the Lady Rebels quiet in the first with three batters up and three quick outs.

In the second, the Devils were shut down again, as only Kristen Miller came out with a single a stolen base only to be stranded by a line-out, strike out and a ground out.

UNLV's second proved to be the first runs of the game as Kendall Fearn hit a single followed by a two-run home run from Becky McDonald over the left-field wall to put the score at 2-0.

The Devils kept quiet on offense until the fifth when a lead-off single to left-field by Kaitlin Cochran followed by another hit to left-field from Jen McCard were advanced by a sacrifice bunt from Rhiannon Baca and then hit home on a huge double down the left-line from catcher Kristen Miller to tie the score 2-2.

Burkhart shut down the Rebels in the sixth as the Devils headed to the seventh which started off with a lead-off hit from Michelle Smith where Smith then stole second and was hit to third on a bunt single from Bridgette Caron.

Smith was then hit home off of a huge double to center-field from Kaitlin Cochran, as Jen McCard stepped up to pop up to third-base though Caron was able to score and Cochran able to advance to third off of a throwing error by Rebel third-baseman Kendall Fearn, putting the Devils up for the Rebels final at-bats, 4-2.

The Devils wrapped up the game behind Burkhart's pitching as she struck out two in the bottom of the seventh with one Rebel ground out to lead the Devils to win number 20 on the season for the Devils as they rebound from their earlier loss to drop UNLV to 10-9 on the season.

The Devils will return to action tomorrow as the UNLV Invitation enters its final day of competition, with the Sun Devils set to take on the Portland State Vikings and Team China in an exhibition game.
