Toreros Take Down Huskies, 6-1

March 5, 2006

SEATTLE - The Washington women's tennis team went down to defeat at the hands of the San Diego Toreros today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Senior Stephanie Svanfeldt provided the only point of the day for the Dawgs (1-7), who have lost their past six matches.

With only six healthy bodies available, the women are trying to cope with a lack of depth and inexperience at the top of their lineup which features a freshman and sophomore in the top three of singles.

Svanfeldt stepped up to provide some leadership over the weekend, winning each of her singles matches the past two days. This afternoon, Svanfeldt dug out her first set with Helene Linstrand, 7-5, then rolled through the second set, 6-1.

The Toreros clinched the match at No. 5 singles, where Brittany Reitz defeated freshman Melinda Wong, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year Emma Murphy patiently traded shots from the baseline with senior Dinka Hadzic, eventually drawing misses from UW's top player. Murphy won, 6-2, 6-1.

The closest match of the afternoon came at second singles, where sophomore Tara Simpson came out ripping the ball and took the first set, 6-1, over San Diego's Lauren Perl. However, after Simpson took a 3-0 second set lead, the match turned and Perl found the range with her backhand, winning four straight games to climb back into, and eventually win the second set, 6-4. Perl would go on to win the third set 6-4 as well to give USD their sixth point.

The Huskies continue to search for answers in doubles play. Early on it appeared as if UW might break through, leading 3-0 at both first and second doubles. But although the No. 2 team of Simpson and Kolbovic lost their lead, they fought back to win 8-5 and put the Huskies one match away from the point. That second win proved elusive, however, as Hadzic and Brymer lost 8-6 in the No. 1 spot after being even at 6-6. Wong and Svanfeldt were tied at 5-5 with USD's Reitz and Vogt at No. 3 doubles, but lost the last three games as the Toreros clinched the point.

Next weekend, the Huskies travel to Los Angeles to face the No. 2 USC Trojans and 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins in Pac-10 play. UW and USC meet on Friday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m., and the Huskies face the Bruins on Saturday, March 11 at 12 p.m.
