No. 14 ASU Gymnasts Play Host To No. 4 Iowa State In Final Home Meet Of 2006

This Week -- The No. 14 ranked Arizona State University's gymnastics team plays host to its final home meet of the 2006 season versus No. 4 Iowa State University on Friday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils, under 26th-year head coach John Spini, are in a new era of Sun Devil gymnastics with the $2 million John Spini Gymnastics Training Facility on the ASU campus. It is the first time in five years that the squad has trained on campus. Spini looks to lead the Sun Devils to an NCAA regional berth for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Spini is currently ASU's longest-tenured head coach, and is tied for second on the all-time Sun Devil head coaching list with long-time track and field mentor Senon 'Baldy' Castillo. Former Sun Devil women's tennis coaching legend Anne Pittman holds the distinction as the longest-tenured ASU head coach in school history at 31 seasons. With a 196.25 win over California (191.85) last Friday, his regular-season record is now 316-125-2 over 25-plus seasons. His won-loss mark at home is 167-27-1.
ASU In The Rankings -- ASU debuted at No. 14 in the GymInfo rankings, based on the preseason coaches poll released in December. ASU climbed one spot to No. 14 in this week's rankings, which are based upon regional qualifying score (RQS). Pac-10 Conference foe UCLA was selected third in the preseason poll with 579 votes and three first-place bids. ASU received 293 votes and was neighbored in the standings by No. 9 Stanford (417), No. 13 Oregon State (331), No. 17 Arizona (188) and No. 18 Washington (185). ASU Faces Nation's Finest -- Arizona State will face eight of the nation's Top 25 teams in 2006, according to the preseason coaches poll. Of the squads the Sun Devils meet in `06, Utah was No. 2, UCLA No. 3, Stanford, No. 9, Iowa State No. 11, Oregon State No. 13, Arizona No. 17, Washington No. 18 and Denver No. 21 in the preseason coaches poll. Five of those meetings are at home in Wells Fargo Arena.
ASU In The Rankings/Individual & Team Events -- Senior Ashley Kelly is ranked 3rd nationally in the all-around (39.43) while junior April Boone is 9th (39.31). Kelly also ranks 5th (9.895) on the balance beam, is tied for 15th on the uneven parallel bars (9.865) and is 21st on vault (9.865). Boone is 9th on the floor exercise (9.885) and 17th on vault (9.87). ASU is ranked 14th nationally as a team and 8th on the balance beam (48.725). The Sun Devils are ranked 16th on floor exercise (48.9), 8th on balance beam (48.95), 16th on the uneven parallel bars (48.769) and are 8th on vault (48.125).
ASU Versus Iowa State -- Arizona State University leads the all-time series with No. 4 Iowa State 4-0. The Sun Devils lead in regular-season meets (3-0) and in postseason competition (1-0). ASU is 2-0 at home versus the Cyclones in Wells Fargo Arena and 1-0 at neutral sites.
