WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore pitcher Anjelica Selden has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 1-6, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Vacaville, Calif., native went 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA last weekend at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Classic, pitching two one-hitters and fanning 32 of the 66 batters she faced over 19 innings in the circle. Opposing batters hit just .081 against Selden on the week.
She opened tournament play with a one-hit shutout against Cal Poly, with 12 of the 15 outs coming on strikeouts in the five-inning contest. She followed with a seven-inning one-hitter against San Jose State, striking out eight, and finished with a seven-inning 12-strikeout performance against Santa Clara in an 8-1 Bruin victory.
The 2005 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, Selden shattered UCLA's single-season strikeout record in 2005 with 485 strikeouts, 126 more than the previous Bruin record. She was a second team NFCA All-American and made the Women's College World Series All-Tournament Team.
UCLA (19-1), hosts Cal State Fullerotn on Wednesday before heading to the Long Beach Invitational this weekend, and will face Mississippi State, Mercer, Syracuse and host Long Beach State.
