Woods Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
March 7, 2006
Cal catcher Haley Woods has been named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for March 1-6, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Woods, a Cal senior, led the Bears over the weekend, going 6-for-6, with five home runs, including a grand slam in the first two games of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawaii. She tallied 11 RBI and five runs in that span.
Over the weekend, the Burlingame, Calif., native finished 8-for-10, with 12 RBI and five runs.
In the Bears' second game - an 8-0 win over Florida International - Woods nailed three home runs, including the grand slam. Woods is only the second Pac-10 player in the last 11 years to hit three homers in a game. Washington's Kristen Rivera also accomplished the feat in 2003. Before that, three Pac-10 players had three-home run games in 1995.
In Cal's 9-0 win against Mississippi Valley State, Woods tallied two, two-run home runs. Against Mercer, the senior finished 2-for-4.
She has nine homers in 15 games this season. She finished with just 13 overall in 2005. Woods leads the Bears in batting average (.479), slugging percentage (1.167), RBI (27), runs scored (16), this (23), doubles (6), home runs (9), on base percentage (.528) and total bases (56). Woods has had at least one hit in the Bears' last eight games, dating back to Feb. 18.
Woods was a 2005 second team All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 selection and was twice named Pac-10 player of the week last season. This is Cal's first conference player of the week award in 2006 and the Bears' 55th weekly honor all-time.
