Six Trojans To Compete At NCAA Indoor Championships This Weekend
March 8, 2006
Williams is the only USC male athlete attending the championships and he will be out to defend his NCAA Indoor high jump title from last season. His qualifying jump of 7-3 3/4 (2.23m) was accomplished on Feb. 10. Williams is the school record-holder in the high jump at a height of 7-6 1/2. The senior won the 2005 indoor championship with a jump of 7-5.
Also defending an indoor title will be Powell, who won the 60m hurdles last year with a time of 7.97. Her qualifying time of 7.98 is second fastest, trailing only Priscilla Lopes of Nebraska who ran a 7.92. Powell defeated Lopes in the finals by two-hundreths of a second in last year's final. The senior Powell also has qualified in the 60m dash with a time of 7.31.
Davis, a junior, also will compete in the 60m hurdles as she qualified with a time of 8.22. Sophomore Rodriguez will run in the 200m as she posted a 23.59 qualifying time.
Freberg, a senior, qualified in the shot with a throw of 53-4 1/4 (16.26m) on March 4. The transfer from Florida placed sixth in the shot at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Freshman Stately, who set the school record in the pole vault on Feb. 25 with a jump of 13-1 1/2 and then bettered it with a jump of 13-5 3/4 on March 4, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with the 11th best height cleared. She is one of two freshmen in the top 20 this indoor season.
Also this weekend, USC's track and field team will compete in the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The hammer competition will be on March 10 at Cal State Fullerton with the rest of the meet to be held at Mt. San Antonio College on March 11.
