Cardinal Opens Stanford Classic With 13-0 Win Over Miami (Ohio)

Stanford, Calif. - No. 5 Cardinal Softball opened the Stanford Classic with a 13-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Senior infielder Lauren Lappin was 4-5 from the plate with three runs. Senior outfielder Catalina Morris tallied her sixth home run of the season, while sophomore infielder Michelle Smith nabbed her second.
The Cardinal got on the board early with two runs in the first inning. Morris was walked to first base to start the inning. Lappin followed with a single to the pitcher. Morris scored from third base on an error by the shortstop, and Lappin scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith to right field. Stanford ended the inning in the lead, 2-0.
Lappin reached with a bunt for the Cardinal in the top of the third inning. Freshman infielder Maddy Coon followed with a single to left field and Smith got to first with a hit to third base, loading the bases. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Lappin and putting Stanford ahead, 3-0.
Junior outfielder Anna Beardman hit a stand-up triple to kick off the fourth inning. Morris then hammered a double down the right line to score Beardman. Morris scored her second run of the game on an error by the shortstop. Smith knocked a single to left field, scoring Coon to put the Cardinal up, 6-0.
In the top of the sixth, Lappin got on base with a double to down the rightfield line. Coon followed with another double to leftfield, scoring Lappin. In the next inning, Missy Penna reached with a single to the shortstop and junior infielder Lindsay Key scored Penna with a double. Senior outfielder Shoney Hixson was walked to first before Morris slammed a three RBI home run over the centerfield fence to bring all three home. Smith then stepped up and hit her second home run of the season, scoring Coon from first base. With six runs in the seventh inning, Stanford ended the game, 13-0.
Sophomore pitcher Becky McCullough improved to 5-2 this season after five innings in the circle. McCullough struck out four batters and allowed three hits. Senior Laura Severson threw the final two innings, striking out two batters without a hit and walking none.
Lappin was 4-5 with three runs scored, while Smith was 3-4 with four RBI and one run. Morris was 2-3 with three runs and four RBI and Coon was 3-5 with two runs and an RBI.
The Cardinal will play its second game of the day versus Wisconsin at 3:00 pm.
