Lepp 11th After Round One at Southern Highlands

March 10, 2006

Las Vegas, Nev. - Washington senior James Lepp shot 2-over 74 in to tie for 11th place after a cold and windy first round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship. The 29th-ranked Washington men's golf team is in ninth position after a first round 309. Georgia and UNLV are tied for the lead at 295. UCLA's Daniel Im leads the individual competition by two strokes at 3-under 69.

'James played well today,' said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond. 'He double-bogeyed the 17th hole which was unfortunate. But he looks to be in pretty good position right now.'

In second position for the Huskies is junior Erik Olson, who carded a 4-over 76 to tie for 21st. Zach Bixler's 79 puts the sophomore in 51st, while junior Alex Prugh's 80 places him in 54th. Sophomore Sterling Clark shot a first-round 81 to tie for 60th in the field.

'As a team we played really well in stretches, but we made too many double and triple bogeys,' Thurmond said. 'That's what happens on a tough course when there are high winds and tough conditions. But we're feeling fine and we still believe we are going to have a good tournament. All the scores were high today, so we feel we have an opportunity to make up a lot of ground.'

The second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship begins at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday from the first and 10th tees. Live scoring of the event is available at golfstat.com.
