No. 5 Stanford Tops Wisconsin, 12-3, In Five Innings

Stanford, Calif. - No. Stanford Softball won its second game of the day over Wisconsin, 12-3. Freshman shortstop Maddy Coon slammed her ninth home run of the season to knock in two runs and end the game in the fifth inning. Freshman pitcher Missy Penna imroved to 11-2 on the season, striking out six batters.
The Badgers scored the first run of the game in the first inning as Samantha Polito scored off of a triple by Katie Hnatyk. Stanford answered in the bottom of the second with three runs. Junior Lindsay Key got things started with a bunt to get on base. Sophomore Anna Beardman then reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Catalina Morris followed with a single, advancing on the throw and scoring Key from second base. Senior Lauren Lappin stepped up and knocked a double up the middle, scoring Beardman and Morris to put Stanford ahead, 3-1.
Stanford's hitters came alive in the bottom of the third. Smith singled to center field to start the inning, advancing to second on a double by junior leftfielder Jackie Rinehart. Sophomore Erin Howe was walked on base, as was Penna to score Smith. Beardman knocked Howe home with a single and Penna scored on the play from an error by the rightfielder. Morris followed with a double to left field, scoring Beardman and Key. The Cardinal closed out the inning with a 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rinehart and Smith both got on base with a single and scored on a single by Penna. Wisconsin put two more runs away in the top of the fifth from Nicole Simmons and Theresa Boruta.
Lappin knocked a double to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Coon put the game away with a two RBI home run over the center field fence.
Morris was 3-4 at the plate against the Badgers with one run and three RBI. Lappin was 2-4 with one run and two RBI and Coon was 1-3 with one run and two RBI. Penna was also 1-2 with three RBI.
Penna improves to 11-2 on the season after striking out six batters and allowing three hits in five innings.
Stanford returns to action tomorrow against Middle Tennessee State at 1:00 pm and BYU at 3:00 pm.
Today's final two games featuring Pacific vs. MTSU at 5:00 pm and Pacific vs. BYU at 7:00 pm have been cancelled due to rain.
