March 10, 2006
Freshman Marisa Samaniego and junior Sara Clark led the UCLA divers on Thursday at the NCAA Zone E Championships as both finished in the top-10 on one-meter. USC diver Blythe Hartley finished first (670.10), while Hawai'i's Qiong-Jie Huang was second (605.90).
Samaniego was UCLA's highest finisher as she placed eighth with a total score of 521.40, while Clark was just behind her in ninth-place with a score of 509.95. Both Samaniego and Clark are now under consideration for a spot at the NCAA Championships after their performance on Thursday.
Freshman Tess Schofield also had a strong day and just missed the finals by two spots and five points as she placed 20th overall with a total of 219.60 points.
'Marisa and Sara were very steady today with no major errors,' said Dive Coach Tom Stebbins. 'As a team we competed well and were right on par with where we thought we would be after Pac-10's. We can always be sharper and cleaner but tomorrow we hope to carry over today's success and get it done the rest of the meet. I'm very pleased with how Tess performed today. She just missed a spot in the final and was sensational.'
Tomorrow, the Bruins compete on three-meter with the platform competition on Saturday.
