LAKEWOOD, Calif. - UCLA's fourth-ranked softball team posted a 2-0 victory over No. 23 Mississippi State on Friday afternoon at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif. The Bruins capitalized on a fifth-inning one-out solo home run from Andrea Duran and an RBI single from Tara Henry in the sixth inning for the win. Lisa Dodd earned the win in the circle, improving to 9-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs posted the first hit of the game in the top of the second inning on a on-out single from Sammie Jo Bailey and extended the rally with a walk to Callye Williams, but the Bruins would end the rally with a 6-4-3 double play.

UCLA loaded the bases in the second inning on a Lisa Dodd single, followed by a double to left field by Whitney Holum. A walk to Ashley Herrera loaded the bases, but the Bruins were unable to push a run across, leaving the game scoreless after two innings of play.

Duran's home run would come with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, a shot to left center that bounced high off of the 40-foot fence at Mayfair Park. Any ball that hits above the lowest supporting crossbar on that fence, which is more than 230 feet from the plate, is ruled a home run.

In the top of the sixth, Hayle Guess posted a one-out inning, but the rally would quickly end when Katie Johnson grounded to Duran at third base on a hit-and-run play. After Johnson was thrown out at first base, Guess attempted to take third on the play, but was thrown out by Herrera for a rare 5-3-5 double play.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Bruins manufacture a second run as Dodd led off the inning with a single before being replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. After Eno stole second base, Tara Henry was able to rope a single to centerfield, allowing Eno to come around and complete the scoring with a 2-0 Bruin lead.

UCLA improves to 21-1 on the season with the victory, out-hitting Mississippi Stte by a 7-3 margin. Dodd struck out three and scattered three hits in the game for her ninth victory of the season.

The Bruins are scheduled to play Mercer at 11:15 am and Syracuse at 3:45 pm. Rain is forecast for Southern California for Saturday and any schedule changes from the Long Beach State Tournament will be posted as quickly as possible on
