UCLA Tops No. 19 Ole Miss, 9-2

March 10, 2006

Los Angeles - UCLA senior second baseman Sean Smith went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI, and junior RHP Hector Ambriz tossed 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts to lead the Bruins to a 9-2 win over No. 19 Ole Miss on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves UCLA to 10-10, while Ole Miss falls to 9-5.

Ambriz recorded a season high for innings pitched and tied a career high for strikeouts, as he opened the game retiring the first 11-consecutive batters he faced. Ambriz finished his outing striking out five of last six Rebels that came to the plate, giving up only one run on three hits in the process.

Freshmen Brandon Crawford and Blair Dunlap, and junior Tim Stewart each recorded two hits apiece, and sophomore Mike Metzger hit his first home run of the season.

UCLA put up three runs in the first inning with the bases loaded on an error by Ole Miss left fielder Evan Button. Crawford and Stewart singled, followed by a walk by freshman Jermaine Curtis to load the bases up. Smith hit a fly ball to the left field warning track with two outs where Button dropped the ball as he hit the wall, allowing all the runners to score. Button was able to recover on the play and throw Smith out at third base to end the inning.

The Bruins hung another three on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to go up 6-0. Senior Chris Jensen hit a RBI single to score Crawford from second, and Smith nailed a double to left center field to score two Bruins.

Ole Miss got on the board in the sixth inning to cut the UCLA lead to 6-1 on a sacrifice fly by Mark Wright to score C.J. Ketchum from third base.

UCLA put up another run in the sixth inning on a solo jack by Metzger to left field to lead off the inning, and would go up 9-1 on a two-run home run by Smith in the seventh inning.

A RBI single by Ole Miss shortstop Zack Cozart in the ninth inning would provide the Rebels with their second run of the game and put the score at 9-2.

UCLA and Ole Miss will play game two of the three game series on Saturday, March 11 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
