Women's Tennis Drops To Fifth-Ranked Trojans
March 10, 2006
LOS ANGELES - The Huskies were handled by fifth-ranked USC today in a weather-shortened match at Marks Stadium. USC won each singles match in straight sets while doubles was bypassed to complete the match before rain came. Washington falls to 1-8 on the year and 0-3 in Pac-10 play while the Trojans are 9-1 and 1-0.
USC, whose only loss was a heartbreaker to No. 1 Stanford, won each first set in singles by at least two service breaks. At fifth singles USC's Carine Vermeulen took the first set 6-0 over freshman Melinda Wong, then surrendered only one game in the second set for the Trojans' first point. Junior Monika Kolbovic went down to Anca Anastasiu at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0, in the next match off court.
Freshman Victoria Brymer played the highest-ranked opponent of her young career so far, third-ranked freshman Amanda Fink. Fink took the first set 6-1 but Brymer was able to take three games off the talented Trojan in the second set before losing 6-3. 48th-ranked Dianne Matias then defeated sophomore Tara Simpson, 6-2, 6-3 for the clinching fourth point.
Senior Stephanie Svanfeldt had her two-match win streak snapped by No. 67 Luana Magnani, losing 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles. The No. 1 singles match was the last one completed, where No. 50 Lindsey Nelson defeated senior Dinka Hadzic, 6-2, 6-2.
Tomorrow the Huskies will face 16th-ranked UCLA. The match has a 12 p.m. start time.
