Cal Baseball Edged at UNLV, 5-4

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - California (9-8) lost its fifth, one-run game of the year, falling to UNLV (9-11), 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium in Las Vegas. The Rebels captured the series between the two schools after the Golden Bear had won Friday's game, 5-1, but lost, 9-6, Saturday and, 5-4, Sunday.
Cal came back from a 5-1 deficit by scoring a run in the sixth on a solo homer by junior catcher Garrett Bussiere, and two runs in the seventh on a two-run homer by senior shortstop Allen Craig. The Bears had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning when freshman designated hitter Ryan Hanlon led off with single, was sacrificed to second by sophomore Josh Satin, and advanced to third on a single to left field by pinch hitter Jordan Karnofsky. Unfortunately for Cal, UNLV reliever Jabe Beard forced freshman right fielder Charlie Cutler to ground into a double play to end the inning.
The winning pitcher for UNLV was starter Ryan Tabor (1-1), who pitched 6.0 innings with two runs, three walks and four strikeouts. Beard picked up his third save of the season and his second save of the series, throwing the eighth and ninth innings, allowing two hits with a strikeout.
The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior starter Michael Cooper (1-2), throwing 5.0 innings with seven hits, five runs, four earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Senior reliever, Jeremy Burchett, threw well in the final three innings for Cal, allowing three hits with no runs, no walks and four strikeouts.
The Bears score a run in the third inning on an RBI single by junior center fielder Brennan Boesch. UNLV rallied to jump to its 5-1 advantage by scoring a run in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by CJ Lang, a run in the fourth on a throwing error by Cooper, and three runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Chris Bonnell and a two-run single by Blake Gailen.
Top hitters for Cal were Craig, who was 2-for-5 with his two-run homer; Chris Errecart, who was 2-for-4 and finished the series 5-for-13 with two, two-run homers; and Satin, who was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.
The Bears will next host Saint Mary's, Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal then plays Pacific in a three-game series, beginning Friday, Mar. 17 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears will play the Mar. 18 game versus the Tigers at 1 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark (home of the Oakland A's single A affiliate) in Stockton, before returning to Evans Diamond at 1 p.m. on Mar. 19.
