Cal Baseball Shuts Out Saint Mary's, 6-0

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Eight different California pitchers held Saint Mary's scoreless on the way to a 6-0 victory Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 10-8 overall, while the Gaels fell to 11-8.
The winning pitcher for Cal was freshman left-hander Chris Petrini (1-1), who pitched the fourth inning with two hits and a strikeout. The longest any Bear pitcher threw was freshman left-hander Michael Bugary's two innings (sixth and seventh innings with no hits, no walks, two strikeouts).
The losing pitcher for Saint Mary's was starter Ian Farmer (1-4), who threw 6.3 innings with three hits, four runs, three earned runs, four walks and a strikeout. Farmer allowed a Cal run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, and then gave up his first clean single in the sixth inning on a lead-off hit by junior center fielder Brennan Boesch. Boesch later scored on a RBI double by senior shortstop Allen Craig, and the Bears tacked on another run on a throwing error by Saint Mary's shortstop Adam Hicks that allowed Craig to score.
Cal added another run in the seventh inning on a RBI single by sophomore catcher Travis Howell, and two runs in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Kyle Spraker, and a passed ball by Gael catcher Ian Gorden.
Top hitter for Cal was Craig, who was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Eric Cattoni and Hicks had two hits apiece for Saint Mary's.
The Bears will next take on Pacific in a three-game series, beginning Friday, Mar. 17 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears will play the Mar. 18 game versus the Tigers at 1 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark (home of the Oakland A's single A affiliate) in Stockton, before returning to Evans Diamond at 1 p.m. on Mar. 19.
