March 14, 2006

Los Angeles - The UCLA baseball team posted 12 runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 16-2 win over UNLV (9-12) on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The 16 runs is a season high for UCLA, as the Bruins improve to 12-11 to move a game above .500 for the first time this season.

Junior Eric Taylor, Jr. led the way with a 2-for-4 performance with a home run and five RBI, and freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. Senior Sean Smith hit 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and three runs scored, and senior Brett McMillan hit his third home run of the season.

Junior Brian Schroeder (3-1) tossed 5.0 innings with six strikeouts, allowing two runs on five hits to earn the win.

UCLA jumped all over UNLV in the first inning thanks to a few free passes and a throwing error to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Freshman Jermaine Curtis started the damage with a one-out walk. Senior Chris Jensen followed with a line drive single to center field to advance Curtis to third base. Junior Tim Stewart roped a line drive base hit to center to score Curtis for the first run of the game and advance Jensen to third.

Junior Hector Ambriz was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Smith followed with a walk to push Jensen across home for a 2-0 lead. Senior Josh Roenicke then hit a ground ball to UNLV first baseman Chris Bonnell who attempted to turn a double play but pulled shortstop Mike Cruz off second base with the throw, allowing Smith to remain safe at second, Ambriz to advance to third and Stewart to score.

Junior Eric Taylor, Jr. then walked to score Ambriz to put the Bruins up 4-0. With two outs, Crawford hit an infield single to first base to score Roenicke and Smith, giving UCLA a 6-0 advantage.

UCLA scored three more runs in the second inning on a RBI single by Ambriz, a RBI double by Smith, and a RBI single by Taylor, Jr.

The Bruins extended their lead to 10-0 in the third inning on a home run by Crawford to right field to lead off the inning. Crawford's drive extended UCLA's home run streak to 10-consecutive games. Taylor's two-run bomb to left center gave UCLA a 12-0 cushion.

UNLV would get on the board in the fifth inning on a two-run single up the middle by Keith Smith with one out and the bases loaded.

UCLA scored four more runs in the eighth inning to run away with a 16-2 lead.

The Bruins will host San Diego State for a three-game series beginning Friday, March 14 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
