Prince Homers As Cougars Defeat Lafayette, 10-2

FRESNO, Calif. - Jared Prince collected three hits, including his first home run of the season, while Wayne Daman Jr. improved to 5-0 on the mound as Washington State University defeated Lafayette, 10-2, at the Johnny Quick Classic Wednesday afternoon at Beiden Field.
With the win the Cougars improve to 17-4 on the year while Lafayette falls to 3-6. The Cougars are now 2-0 in the tournament while Lafayette goes to 0-2.
Paul Gran led off the second with a walk and came around to score on Jim Murphy's fielder's choice to make it 1-0, Cougars. The lead was increased to 2-0 in the third as Jay Miller lined a one-out single to right, made his way to third via a wild pitch and stolen base, then scored on Prince's single through the left side.
That was more than enough for Daman, who earned his fifth win in as many starts this season. The junior right hander allowed one run on five hits while striking out seven. Freshman Ross Humes came on in the ninth, surrendering one unearned run on a pair of hits.
The Cougars added two more runs in the fourth as Simi Reynolds drove a double down the line in right, scoring Mike Gilbert and Jeff Miller for the 4-0 lead. It marked the first of two hits on the afternoon for Reynolds, who drove in a season-high four runs.
In the fifth Prince connected for his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence. Two more runs in the seventh extended the Cougar lead to 8-0, highlighted by a Jeff Miller RBI double deep of the center field wall.
Lafayette broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh as it strung together three singles, the final one off the bat of Dan Bierce than scored Frank Cortazar. Lafayette added an unearned run in the ninth to close out the scoring.
WSU scored 10 or more runs for the sixth time this season and had double-digit hits for the 12th time. In addition to Prince's three, Jay Miller, Zach McAngus, Jeff Miller and Reynolds each added two hits each. Prince added three RBIs while Travis Coulter scored a pair of runs.
WSU continues play at the Johnny Quik Classic Thursday when it faces the host Fresno State Bulldogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
