Care To Dance? Chloe Kerr Has Her Shoes Set For The NCAA Tourney

March 16, 2006

It's time to dance!

It's about that time again where only the top 64 teams get to continue into postseason in order to compete for a national championship. For the second year in a row, your Women of Troy have had the pleasure of being selected to join the elite teams of women's basketball. This gives us the chance to prove what we have been training and playing for all season, as well as the opportunity to continue to gain respect as an opponent. We would like to go as far as we can in the tourney, but regardless, this experience brings the team closer as a whole and gives us momentum that we can build on for next season. I know that our baby Trojans Erika, Hailey, Jacki and Morgan are all excited to initiate their collegiate experience.

In our quest this week to prepare for the tournament, my sister -- a.k.a. the one and only Markisha Lea -- unfortunately broke her right arm during practice. At the time of the accident, in my mind as well as the entire team, I think there was a simultaneous 'butcher me now!' thought going through our heads. We were all devastated because Markisha had been playing so well as the season was progressing, and I knew in my heart that in Virginia she was going to contribute enormously to the team. But in the spirit of Markisha, nothing can ever bring her down; therefore the morale of the team continues to be uplifted and her smiles and laughter reassure us that we can still complete the task ahead, even with another man down.

This season truly has been an obstacle course for us. We have been in battle after battle, and we have lost players. We lost key components to the team in Simone Jelks, Brynn Cameron and Jamie Funn. Now after Markisha's injury, it seems that the Women of Troy should throw up the white flag and surrender. But in the spirit of a Trojan, that is not our style. One thing I can say is that we are still here; we are still fighting. With what we have left, we can still fight, we can still win, and we can still succeed. The Women of Troy do not back down from a fight; it just makes us that much stronger in mind and spirit. This type of challenge built us into the players all of us are today and I know that in my heart we will represent our university, friends, families, peers, as well as ourselves respectably. We have been waiting for this moment in the season for a long time, and nothing is going to stop us from fighting through the battles to win the war.

I hope that everyone has us in their hearts and spirits this Sunday as we take on South Florida. We have many supporters of USC women's basketball and I know that we will try our best to give back to those that have been so dedicated. Thank you and may God bless.

Love always,
