Softball Falls To #4 Texas
March 16, 2006
FULLERTON, Calif.-- The 14th-ranked Washington softball team lost a tough 3-0 battle to fourth-ranked Texas Thursday night to open play at the Judi Garman Classic. The loss dips UW to 19-7 on the season, while the Longhorns improve to 27-2.
The game opened like a classic pitcher's duel with UT ace Cat Osterman recording eight of the first nine outs via strikeout and UW hurler Danielle Lawrie fanning seven.
Texas' luck would change in the fourth, however, when Shannon Thomas opened the frame with a four-pitch walk and scored when Desiree Williams drove a triple into the right-centerfield gap. Two batters later, Megan Willis hit her first collegiate home run with a deep drive to centerfield to put UT on top, 3-0.
That would prove to be all the scoring Texas would need as Osterman (16-0) surrendered just one hit-- an infield single to Aimee Minor in the second inning-- and struck out 19.
Lawrie (11-3) took the tough loss as she held the Longhorns to two hits and struck out 13.
The Huskies continue tournament action Friday with games vs. No. 9 Michigan (11:15 a.m.) and No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette (6:15 p.m.) at the Titan Softball Complex.
