McCleave Earns School Record At NCAA Meet
March 17, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Erin McCleave set a Washington State record in the 200 freestyle as racing continued at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday, in Athens, Ga.
McCleave was the lone Cougar competing at the second day of the NCAA meet, swimming to a 21st place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.09. The time marked a lifetime best swim for McCleave and bested the previous WSU record of 1:48.48 set by the junior at the 2005 Minnesota Invitational.
The 2006 NCAA Championships conclude Saturday, March 18, with McCleave and senior Jane Copland entered in the 1650 freestyle and 200 breaststroke respectively.
'I feel like both Jane and Erin just needed to get the experience of racing at this level,' said Head Swimming Coach Erica Quam. 'Now that they've swam in these tight, fast races were everyone is so close, I feel like they are absolutely ready to go for Saturday. They are both swimming in their best events and this last day should be our best.'
Saturday's races also include the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay. For more information and complete result, visit www.ncaasports.com/swimming/womens.
