No. 13 Oregon State Wins 4-1 In Pac-10 Opener Against USC
March 17, 2006
LOS ANGELES --- Dallas Buck allowed just one earned run in seven innings Friday as the No. 13 Oregon State Beavers defeated the USC Trojans, 4-1, in the Pac-10 Conference opener for both teams. Buck walked six batters, but got two key double plays, including the fifth inning with one out and the bases loaded to improve to 5-0 on the season.
OSU (12-5, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead after Bill Rowe hit an RBI single to left in the first off USC starter Ian Kennedy (2-4). Kennedy took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings with five walks and five strikeouts.
The Beavers had runners at first and second in the fourth. Kennedy's errant pickoff attempt at second pushed the runners ahead a base and Chris Kunda scored when Darin Vieira's throw from center bounced into the OSU dugout. Cole Gillespie then scored on the next play, making it a 3-0 lead.
Scott Santschi and Darwin Barney had two hits each for the Beavers as Santschi added two RBI.
The series continues tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday at noon. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with the video webcast courtesy of College Sports' All-Access only on Sunday. Saturday's game will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by FOX Sports Net.
