UCLA Tops San Diego State, 14-6

Los Angeles - Junior Hector Ambriz went 3-for-4 with three RBI while tossing 8.0 innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win, and senior Sean Smith went 3-for-3 with a home run, a triple, a single and three RBI to led UCLA to a 14-6 win over visiting San Diego State on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves the Bruins to 13-11, while the Aztecs drop to 6-18.
Freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a RBI, freshman Blair Dunlap hit 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, junior Tim Stewart a RBI triple, and senior Brett McMillan hit a three-run home run.
Ambriz (4-3) limited San Diego State to just one run on seven hits while walking two in his eight innings of work.
UCLA jumped to an early 2-0 lead on the Aztecs on a two-run home run to left field by Dunlap to score Crawford after he single to left. Dunlap's jack continued UCLA's home run streak to 11-consecutive games.
The Bruins went up 4-0 in the second inning. Crawford led the inning off with a walk and then stole second to give UCLA a runner in scoring position. Ambriz scored Crawford on a two-out single through the right side as Crawford beat out the throw from right field and slide right under the catcher's tag at home. Stewart followed with a triple down the right field line to pick up Ambriz from first and give UCLA a 4-0 advantage.
UCLA tacked on another run in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Smith tripled to right center to lead off the inning before Crawford hit a two-out infield single to second base to pick Smith up.
Four more runs went up on the board in the fifth inning to give UCLA a 9-0 lead. Ambriz nailed a RBI double to left center to score Dunlap from second, and Smith connected on a three-run home run to left field, his third of the season.
San Diego State got on the board in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Nick Romero and had a chance at another run on a would-be sacrifice fly by Brock Ungricht, but Lance Zawadzki left third base early for the second out.
UCLA scored five more runs in the sixth inning with two outs on a RBI single by Ambriz to score Crawford from second base, a wild pitch that scored senior Chris Jensen from third, and a three-run home run by McMillan.
San Diego State would not go quietly in the ninth, as the Aztecs put up five runs on the Bruin bullpen to cut the score to 14-6.
UCLA and San Diego State will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday, March 18 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
