Los Angeles - Solid pitching and timely hitting was on display for UCLA as the Bruins rolled to a 12-2 win over San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves UCLA to 14-11, while the Aztecs drop to 6-19 on the season.
Junior Hector Ambriz led the way with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate with a home run, two walks and four RBI, and senior Chris Jensen went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Freshmen Brandon Crawford and Jermaine (two doubles), and senior Sean Smith each collected two hits apiece.
Junior Dave Huff went 8.0 innings with five strikeouts, allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks. The Bruin pitching staff did not allow a walk in the game.
UCLA took advantage of a revolving carrousel of free passes from San Diego State starter, and former Bruin, Adam Simon in the second inning to go up 6-0. Things got going after Ambriz walked to lead off the inning and junior Tim Stewart was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for the Bruins. Smith then singled through the right side to score Ambriz from second and put UCLA up 1-0.
Curtis walked to load the bases, and senior Josh Roenicke followed with a RBI single to right field to score Stewart. Freshman Ryan Babineau then grounded out to second base to score Smith from third and put UCLA up 3-0. Crawford walked to reload the bases, and freshman Blair Dunlap was hit by a pitch to score Curtis from third. Ambriz drew a two-out walk to score Roenicke, and Stewart reached on a fielding error by Aztec third baseman Lance Zawadzki to score Crawford from third and put the Bruins up 6-0.
UCLA got two more runs in the fourth inning to go up 8-0 on a two-run home run to center field by Ambriz with two outs, his third of the season, to score senior Chris Jensen who doubled to right center. The home run was the third of the season for Ambriz, and extended UCLA's home run streak to 12-consecutive games.
San Diego State got on the board in the fifth inning on a solo home run to left field by Brock Ungricht to lead off the inning, and a one-out solo home run by Curt Mendoza down the left field line to cut the UCLA lead to 8-2.
UCLA responded with four runs in the fifth inning to go up 12-2. Curtis doubled to left field to open the inning, and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Babineau. Crawford laid down a bunt single down the first base line to score Curtis. Jensen dropped a two-run double down the left field line as the San Diego State outfield was played to pull to score Dunlap and Roenicke and give UCLA an 11-2 lead. Ambriz followed with a single to right field to score Jensen from second and put the Bruins up for good at 12-2.
UCLA and San Diego State will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday, March 19 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
