Vandenberg and Nelson Earn All-American honors on last day of NCAA Championships

Senior Kim Vandenberg and junior Katie Nelson led the Bruin swim and dive team on the last day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Athens, GA as both earned All-American honors in their respective events.

The Bruins placed 20th overall with 53 points, while Auburn edged out Georgia (515.5) for the team title with 518.5 points. Arizona, the Pac-10 Champion, finished third with 415 points.

Vandenberg came up just short of her first NCAA title as she placed second in her signature event, the 200 Butterfly, in a season-best time of 1:56.02. She ends her career at UCLA with 16 All-American honors.

Nelson, the Pac-10 Champion in the 1650 Freestyle, finished eighth in that event, swimming a season-best 16:15.23 to earn All-American honors.

In the 200 Breaststroke, sophomore Nicolette Teo finished 35th (2:17.16), senior Eileen Seissen was 43rd (2:19.45) and sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto placed 44th (2:19.64).

In the final event of the night, the 400 Freestyle Relay, the team of freshman Anna Poteete, Vandenberg, junior Amy Thurman and Nelson placed 22nd in a time of 3:23.23.
