CARSON, Calif. - University of Colorado junior forward Katie Griffin has been called in to U.S. Soccer Under-21 National Team training, the second Buffalo to get a call from the national team program in as many years.

Griffin and the other 23 players brought to the Home Depot Center started training on March 19 and will continue through this Friday, March 24.  During their time in Carson, they will play three matches in addition to regular practices and intra-squad scrimmages.

A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Griffin has participated in the Olympic Development Program for several years, but this is her first call up to any U.S. Soccer National Team.  She joins Fran Munnelly as the two Buffaloes to put in time with U.S. Soccer in the last two years.

"It kind of came as a little bit of as shock the way the phone call came to me last week, but it's a very deserving opportunity for Katie," said head coach Bill Hempen.  "She is following in the footsteps of Fran, and I think she's looked up to Fran and has wanted to accomplish all the things Fran has.  She has done a lot of it on her own with the way she prepares herself for training and games and everything else.  I'm very proud of Katie and this is a great opportunity for her."

Griffin was CU's leading scorer in the 2005 season with a school record 12 goals to go with a single assist.  She was named to the NSCAA All-Region team, and was an All-Big 12 selection as well.

U.S. U-21 head coach Jill Ellis is continuing the process of selecting a team to participate in the annual Nordic Cup, being held in Norway this coming summer.

The USA has won an unprecedented seven straight Nordic Cups against the top U-21 teams from Europe. Numerous players who are eligible for the next Nordic Cup are spending time with the full Women's National Team and the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team, giving Ellis a chance to bring in some new players

The U-21s will face the U.S. U-20s in a pair of scrimmages on March 21. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. PT and 7 p.m. PT. The U-21s will also face the women's club team Ajax on March 23 at 7 p.m. PT.
