Huskies Seventh after First Round in Georgia

March 24, 2006

Athens, Ga. - The 25th-ranked Washington women's golf team shot 24-over 312 to place seventh after the first round of play at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Wake Forest carded a 10-over 298 to lead the field by three strokes over host Georgia.

Senior Sung Ea Lee led the Huskies with a 4-over 76, good for 12th. Georgia's Jackie Beers was the only golfer in the red on the afternoon, carding a 3-under 69 to lead the individual competition by three strokes over Wake Forest's Nannette Hill.

'It was kind of a tough day, given that it was pretty cold and windy,' said Washington head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'Everyone's scores were higher than we thought they'd be because of those conditions, so shooting a first-round 76 or 77 was not too bad. We've just got to get everybody clicking at the same time.'

Junior Amber Prange was a stroke behind Lee, reaching the clubhouse in a tie for 26th at 5-over 77. Paige Mackenzie carded a 7-over 79 in round one, placing her 42nd. Kim Shin's 80 and Amy Wang's 83 were good for 47th and 70th, respectively.

The second round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (ET).
