Ducks Best Huskies, 6-1

March 25, 2006

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon Ducks sent Washington's women's tennis team to its tenth consecutive defeat today, 6-1, at the Student Tennis Center. Sophomore Tara Simpson got the lone singles win for Washington. For the second straight match, the Huskies (1-11, 0-5) were only able to start five out of six players in singles.

This was the second win for Oregon over the Huskies this season, the first a 5-2 non-conference win in Seattle in February. Simpson earned one of Washington's two points in that match, and again posted a victory this afternoon in a three set affair with Anna Powaska at third singles. Powaska breezed through the first set, 6-1, however Simpson responded with a one-sided win of her own in the second, 6-2. Holding a 4-1 lead, Simpson faltered and Powaska took the next four games for a 5-4 lead. But Simpson won three of the next four games for the 7-5 win and her team-leading fourth dual singles win. Simpson now has consecutive singles wins in Pac-10 play after beating UCLA's Alex McGoodwin in UW's last conference match.

The number one singles match between Dinka Hadzic and Dominika Dieskova was quite similar to their earlier encounter in February. In the previous match and again today, Dieskova took the first set, Hadzic the second, and Dieskova the third.

Cecilia Olivos defeated freshman Victoria Brymer at second singles, 6-3, 6-4 and Carmen Seremeta battled back from a set down against UW senior Stephanie Svanfeldt to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4. Freshman Melinda Wong had a tale of two sets, losing the first in a 9-7 tiebreak to Anna Leksinska, then lost the second set, 6-0.

Junior Monika Kolbovic was unable to compete in singles for the second match in a row after finishing doubles. That gave the singles point at No. 6 singles to Oregon automatically.

Doubles play was never in question after the first few games as Oregon swept all three matches, the closest score being 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

The Huskies return home tomorrow to play a non-conference match with the 72nd-ranked Washington State Couars. Weather permitting, the match will be played outdoors at Bill Quillian Stadium. 12 p.m. is the start time.
