March 25, 2006
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After a 10-day break from competition for winter quarter final exams, the UCLA softball team returned to the field on Saturday afternoon at Cal State Northridge and recorded a 1-0 victory over the Matadors. UCLA (28-1) returns to action on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium as the Bruins play host to No. 16 Northwestern at 1 pm.
The Bruins loaded the bases in the third inning as Andrea Duran led off the frame with a single. After Krista Colburn bunted into a fielders choice, she went to second on a walk to Caitlin Benyi and the bases were loaded on a two-out walk by Jodie Legaspi, but the Matadors were able to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
UCLA had runners in scoring position again in the fourth as Whitney Holum led off with a walk before being replaced by pinch runner Alissa Eno. Eno went to second on an infield single by Tara Henry. The pair advanced on an outfield fly-out by Duran, but were unable to score, leaving the game scoreless.
In the top of the sixth, UCLA put together a two-out rally, starting with an infield hit, her second of the day, from Henry. After Duran was walked, Colburn connected on a single up the middle, scoring Henry for the game-winning RBI.
In the circle, Lisa Dodd struck out three on the day to earn her 13th victory of the season.
UCLA returns to action on Sunday afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch against Northwestern.
