Cardinal Concludes Stanford Invitational II With 3-0 Win Over UC Davis

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 5 Cardinal wrapped up the Stanford Invitational II with a 3-0 win over UC Davis. Stanford won four straight games over the weekend to remain undefeated at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. Senior Catalina Morris knocked in sophomore Anna Beardman for the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning against UC Davis. Sophomore Becky McCullough pitched her seventh win of the season and senior Laura Severson recorded her first save.
After four scoreless innings, Beardman got on base with a single past the pitcher in the bottom of the fifth, and later stole second base. Morris then knocked her home with a single to centerfield and Stanford moved into the lead.
Severson entered the game to pitch in the sixth inning and proceeded to strike out two batters, with an assist on the third out. Sophomore infielder Michelle Smith got on base in the bottom of the sixth with a single to the shorstop. Junior outfielder Jackie Rinehart advanced her to second with a single to right field, and Smith took third on an error by the catcher. Rinehart advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Smith was out at home on the play. With two outs, freshman infielder Missy Penna was walked to first base and both runners later advanced on a wild pitch. Sophomore catcher Erin Howe stepped up and hit a hard single to centerfield, bringing home Rinehart and Penna. Stanford ended the sixth inning ahead, 3-0, and held on for the win.
In five innings, McCullough struck out five batters and walked one, allowing four hits. Severson struck out two batters and walked none in two innings for the save.
Beardman and Rinehart were both 2-2 from the plate with one run. Howe was 1-3 with two RBI and Morris was 1-3 with one RBI.
In four games this weekend, the Cardinal out-scored its opponents 21-1. Rinehart led the Cardinal hitters with a .615 average, three runs and three RBI. Lappin hit .455 with three runs and two RBI, while Beardman averaged .444 with two runs and three RBI. The Cardinal was 8-11 in stolen bases.
Stanford will open Pac-10 Conference play next Friday through Sunday, beginning at UCLA on Friday, March 31. The Cardinal will then travel to Washington for two games on Saturday and Sunday.
