Key Hits Grand Slam In 11-0 Victory Over UC Davis

Stanford, Calif. - No. 5 Stanford knocked off UC Davis in the first of two games against the Aggies today, 11-0. Junior Lindsay Key hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game early. Freshman Missy Penna pitched her first no hitter of the season, striking out seven batters in six innings, including three in the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore Michelle Smith singled up the middle to get on base. Sophomore infielder Erin Howe hit a sacrifice bunt to move Smith to second base. Penna and sophomore Becky McCullough were both walked to first. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore outfielder Anna Beardman was walked on base and Smith scored the first Cardinal run of the game. Penna came home on a wild pitch and Stanford ended the inning with an early 2-0 lead.
Senior Lauren Lappin reached in the next inning with a single past the pitcher and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Smith slammed a home run over the left field fence to score Lappin, her third home run of the season. The Cardinal ended the third inning ahead, 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lappin was hit by a pitch and later stole second base. Smith reached on an error by the first baseman, and Lappin scored from third base on the error.
Pinch hitter Megan Bordelon was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth to get on base. Freshman Maddy Coon was walked to first base, advancing Bordelon. Smith was then walked to load the bases and Rinehart slammed Bordelon home with a single to right field. With the bases loaded, Key stepped up and knocked a grand slam over the left field fence to end the game with for an 11-0 Cardinal victory.
In six innings, Penna struck out seven batters and walked one for her first no-hitter of the season. Smith was 2-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI, while Key was 1-2 with one run and four RBI. Coon was also 1-3 with two runs and one RBI and Lappin was 1-2 with two runs.
The Cardinal will conclude the Stanford Invitational II with a second game against UC Davis at 3:00 pm.
