Panzeri Wins Co-Medalist Honors at Duck Invite

March 28, 2006

Junction City, Ore. - Washington sophomore Joe Panzeri picked a good time to have a career day, shooting a career-low 6-under 66 to tie for medalist honors this afternoon at the final round of the Duck Invitational. Panzeri, competing as an individual alongside three other Husky golfers, finished the tournament tied with Washington State's Ryan Witz at 5-under 211. The win marked the first time Panzeri has earned medalist honors as a Husky, and his tournament total score of 211 also established a new career-low.

The Boise, Idaho, native made a late charge for the trophy, recording birdies on three of his last four holes. For the round, Panzeri notched six birdies and not a single bogey. He started the day in 15th.

'Joe played flawlessly,' said Washington assistant coach Jon Reehoorn. 'He hit the ball really well and made a lot of par putts. We talked last night about playing a round without any bogeys, about how this is the kind of course where he could do that, and he went out and did it.'

Panzeri, who shot 1-under 71 in round one and 2-over 74 in round two, was particularly strong on the greens.

'The key was his putting,' Reehoorn said. 'I don't know if he hit the ball as well as he did yesterday with the irons, but every time he hit the green he was able to make par. And that was the key. I told him: `This is a course that not a lot of people are going to make a whole lot of bogeys on, so you need to save par.' He was able to do that. Today was huge for his confidence and will help him move forward as we get ready for postseason.'

Panzeri was not the only Husky to shoot in the 60s on the afternoon, as fellow sophomore Zach Bixler turned in a 3-under 69 to finish the tournament in 15th at even-par 216. Sterling Clark also placed in the top 20, taking 17th at 2-over 218 after carding a 1-over 73 in the third round. Senior Seth Yates shot 5-over 77 to finish 51st at 14-over 230.

The team competition, which Washington's delegation did not participate in, was won by San Diego State at 10-under 854.

The Huskies return to action April 1-2 at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Evans, Ga.
