Track & Field to Compete at Stanford Invite

COUGAR TRACK & FIELD AT STANFORD: A select group of Washington State University men's and women's track and field athletes will compete at the Stanford Invitational, Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1 at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford campus...more than 1,000 participants in all age-ranges participate...complete meet schedule will be revealed Wed., March 29, at and Live Stats will be displayed during the meet, results of each event posted shortly after completion...results will be posted on the WSU Athletics website,, when available after competition concludes each day.

RICHARDSON TO RACE THIS WEEKEND: Former Cougar five-time All-American and current assistant coach Ellannee Richardson will race this weekend in the women's invitational 400m intermediate hurdles...Richardson, with a PR of 55.61 seconds, will face three women from the Sheffield Elite Track Club who are all ranked in the U.S. women's top 10 for 400m hurdles - Brenda Taylor (55.40), Shauna Smith (54.21), and Tanisha Mills (55.57).

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 33rd season with the Cougar track program; 12th year as a head coach, 11th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...volunteer coach Andrea Thornton returns for her third year with the program...coaches Farwell, Macdonald, Richardson, McGee and Thornton all competed for WSU.

COUGS COMPETING AT WHITWORTH INVITE: Another group of WSU track and field athletes will be competing at the Whitworth Invite, April 1, at Boppell Track in north Spokane...Cougs competing include: Sprinters/hurdlers - Angelica Flynn, Reny Follett, Bob Frey, and Josh Leyk Middle distance/distance runners - Selena Galaviz, Alyssa Modrell, Sam Stone, and Matt Miller Jumpers - Kyle Eaton, Nick Isaac, and Ryan Thomas Throwers - Katie Corder, Jasmine McCormack, Shannon Posey, Vic Asher, Chase Mancuso, Clint Osborn, and Cameron Schwisow.

COUGS HAVE GOOD SHOWING AT TROJAN INVITE: The WSU throwers had a particularly good meet in Los Angeles last weekend...Friday afternoon hammer throwers McKenzie Garberg and Phil MacArthur reached NCAA Regional Qualifying marks...Garberg's throw of 54.48m/178-9 is the fourth-best in WSU women's hammer history...Saturday, Jon Jeffreys, Matt Lamb, and Drew Ulrick all improved their NCAA RQs from the previous week...Jeffreys threw the javelin a PR and event-winning distance of 68.95m/226-2, the eighth best throw in WSU men's history...freshman Matt Lamb also PRd with his winning discus throw of 55.52m/182-2 while Drew Ulrick moved his discus NCAA RQ to 54.92m/180-2...Jenna Dean tossed the javelin an NCAA RQ but not improved season mark of 48.82m/160-2...both Tamara Diles and Tiffany Maskulinski cleared NCAA RQs of 4.01m/13-1 3/4 in the pole vault...on the track, Haley Paul ran just off her PR in the 1500m with an NCAA RQ time of 4:26.07...the men's 4x100m relay squad of Martin Boston, James McSwain, Justin Woods and Jaycee Robertson reached an NCAA RQ time of 39.67...Robin Mikesh won the women's high jump after clearing 1.65m/5-5 with McKinnon Hanson clearing the same height for third place...the women's 4x400m relay team of Julie Pickler, Brandi Probasco-Canda, Diana Pickler, and Lorraine King finished second with a time of 3:43.68, just 1.38 seconds off the NCAA RQ.

COUGAR OUTDOOR REDSHIRTS: The following student-athletes will redshirt during the outdoor season: distance runners Chris Concha, Alex Grant, Clay Hemlock and Chris Williams, throwers Vic Asher and Cameron Schwisow, and decathlete Brandon Brownell.

INJURY UPDATE: All-American pole vaulter Tyson Byers is practicing again and aiming toward the Mt. SAC Relays April 14-16, for his return to competition after missing all of the indoor season with a strained hamstring.

NO QUALIFYING MARKS NEEDED FOR PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: This is the second year the Pacific-10 Conference will forego its own set of qualifying marks for its championship meet...instead, a maximum of 24 women and 24 men may be entered from each school at the head coach's discretion...outdoor and indoor seasons will be used for descending order lists and seeding into the championship heats/flights.

WRISTBANDS FOR NYGARD: The WSU Track & Field teams are selling wristbands for senior hurdler Eric Nygard (Wenatchee, Wash.)...Nygard, a scorer in the 400m hurdles at the 2005 Pac-10 Championships, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2005...after an initial treatment, he was thought to be in January 2006, he was informed the cancer had returned and began treatment that prevents him from competing with the WSU Track & Field team...still attending classes at WSU with goal to graduate in August and apply to dental schools...Eric is married and has an infant daughter...wristbands are black with a quote from Charles Beard, selected by Nygard, in yellow lettering, 'When it's dark enough, you can see the stars' and his initials, E.N...cost is $5 (medium and large) purchase a wristband, contact Cougar assistant coach Ellannee Richardson at 509-335-4730...additionally, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is conducting a penny drive through donation containers in each WSU team's locker room with the proceeds going to Nygard...a benevolent account has been established at Washington Mutual Bank under his name for donations to assist with medical expenses and can be made at any WaMu branch.
