No.8 Women's Rowing To Compete in 33rd Annual San Diego Crew Classic

LOS ANGELES - The USC women's rowing team will travel to San Diego this weekend for the 33rd Annual San Diego Crew Classic held at Mission Bay on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2. This will be the Women of Troy's second outing of the season, and their first regatta. The Trojans are currently ranked 8th in the CRCA/US Rowing preseason poll and will be competing against six of the top 20 teams.

The two-day event kicks off Saturday at 7:30 am and concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m., with over 3,500 competitors ranging from juniors to masters to Olympians. The San Diego Crew Classic is the largest multi-laned regatta for Eights in the United States.

USC will compete in the women's Varsity Eight, JV Eight, Novice Eight, Open Eight divisions. The preliminary heats will take place on Saturday at 8:50 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1:20 p.m., respectively. A group of USC Alumni will be competing in the Open Eight division, they will be lead by volunteer assistant coach Sara Pomeroy in the No. 8 seat. The Varsity Eight earned a No. 1 seed for the race along with second ranked, defending National Champions, California. Competing in the Varsity Eight boat will be Liz O'Neill (cox), Tatiana Boldyreva,(stroke), Magda Madziewicz, Ligita Kaviere, Dunja Pejcic, Anna Efremova, Diana Ivanova, Simone Manhold, Megan Biging.

Other Pac-10 competition the Trojans will face include No. 11 Washington State, No. 15 UCLA, No. 16 Oregon State, and Stanford. The Top qualifiers from Saturday's races will compete in the grand finals on Sunday, while the second group of top times ill advance to the Petite Finals for places 7-12.

Last season USC's Varsity Eight finished third in the grand final just seconds behind the Golden Bears and the Cardinal. The JV Eight placed fifth in the grand final and the Novice Eight placed eighth in their division, marking their best-ever performance at the two-day regatta.

Crew staging, viewing and the finish line is held at the Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay. Admissions for the event is $7 a day per person or $10 for both days, children 13 and under are free. Preferred parking is $10 per day and free parking is located at Vacation Isle with free shuttle service to Crown Point.


From Interstate 5, Southbound

Take the Balboa and Garnet Exit. Go right (west) on Garnet Street to a Y junction and stay left on Balboa. Where Balboa merges with Grand, turn left onto Lamont Street. Go straight (south) on Lamont to the 'Yield' sign at Crown Point Drive. Go straight ahead; trailer parking is down the hill to the left and car parking is to the right.

From Interstate 5 Northbound

Exit I-5 at Grand and Garnet. Turn left (west) at the first left (Grand), then left on Lamont and straight ahead to the 'Yield' sign at Crown Point Drive. Go straight ahead; trailer parking is down the hill to the left and car parking is to the right.
