March 30, 2006

LOS ANGELES -- Former Trojan Brian Bannister (2000-03) has been named to the New York Mets' starting rotation when the 2006 major league baseball season begins on Sunday.

Bannister, the son of former major league pitcher Floyd, will become USC's 93rd former player to play in the majors and current head coach Mike Gillespie's 25th former player to reach baseball's top level.

Gillespie coached all five former Trojans who reached the 2003 All-Star Game (Aaron Boone, Bret Boone, Geoff Jenkins, Mark Prior and Barry Zito).

Last season, 18 former Trojans played in at least one game in the majors.
