UW Frosh Campbell to Race at World Championships

March 30, 2006

FUKUOKA, Japan - Husky freshman Anita Campbell will trade in her purple and gold Washington uniform for the red and white of Team Canada on Saturday, as she represents her native country in the 2006 IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Campbell's race begins at 1:30 p.m. local time in Japan; 8:30 p.m. Friday in Seattle.

Campbell, 18, is the eighth Husky, and third UW freshman, to compete at the World Cross Country Championships since 2003. The Vancouver, B.C., native qualified for the meet with a second-place finish at December's Canadian Junior National Championships.

Saturday's race will actually represent Campbell's second World Championships appearance -- she ran 84th overall as a high-school senior at the 2005 World Junior Championships in St. Etienne, France, after finishing 13th at the Canadian nationals the previous winter.

Campbell was outstanding during her freshman cross country season at Washington, her 94th-place NCAA Championships finish the highest by a UW woman since 2001. She was the 13th-highest finishing freshman at the NCAA meet, and earned All-West Region honors with an 11th-place finish at November's Regional meet.

Fans of cross country can watch Campbell's race live on the internet, via a pay-per-view webcast at www.iaaf.org. For more information on the IAAF Cross Country Championships, visit www.iaaf.org.
