Cardinal Impressive in 7-0 Shutout Over Washington

Stanford began the Pac-10 season in impressive fashion with a 7-0 shutout today over visiting Washington. The Cardinal, now 10-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, beat the No. 26 Huskies in all three doubles matches to win the doubles point, and all six singles matches in straight sets. Washington fell to 13-4 overall and 0-1 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal was outstanding in doubles play as Stanford won all three matches to take a 1-0 lead. Senior KC Corkery and freshman Matt Bruch beat the Huskies Daniel Chu and Alex Slovic at No. 1 by an 8-4 mark. Chu and Slovic are currently the 19th ranked doubles team in the country.
Stanford captured the doubles point after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 as well. Blake Muller and James Pade combined to beat Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharszky, 8-6 at No. 2 and James Wan and Jon Wong defeated Washington's Jean-Noel Insausti and Mike Ricks, 8-7 at No. 3.
In singles, Stanford was near perfect with six straight set wins. Bruch, ranked 18th in the country, handed Slovic, ranked 39th, a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at No. 1. Pade beat Pierre Metenier, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 to improve his dual match record to 11-2.
No. 3 pitted two nationally-ranked players in Corkery, ranked 24th, and Insausti, ranked 57th. Corkery recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory to run his overall record this season to an impressive 19-3.
Stanford won all three matches at the bottom of the lineup as James Wan, Blake Muller and Phil Kao each registered wins. Wan, who is 6-0 playing in the No. 4 position, beat Andy Kuharszky, 6-3, 6-0. Muller defeated Washington's Daniel Chu, 7-5, 7-6 in the tightest match of the day, and Phil Kao beat Klaus Jank, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Cardinal will host No. 24 Boise State on Monday at the Taube Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 pm.
