Defense Turns In Another Strong Performance In Cougar Scrimmage

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University defense accounted for six sacks and an interception while holding the offense to just one score during the first full scrimmage of the spring season Saturday morning at Martin Stadium.

Offensively, senior wide receiver Jason Hill led the way with six receptions for 94 yards, one of 10 Cougar receivers to catch a pass on the day.

The Cougar offense accounted for 311 total yards, 212 through the passing game and 99 on the ground. In addition to Hill, Benny Ward and Kipp Curtis each had three receptions, Ward totaling 31 yards and 30 for Curtis. Scott Selby, Andy Largent, Jed Collins, Reid McEllrath, Bryan Baird, Anthony Thompson and DeMaundray Woolridge also caught balls during the scrimmage.

Collins had the only offense touchdown of the day, a two-yard pass last in the scrimmage from freshman quarterback Arkelon Hall.

The Cougars had four quarterbacks take snaps on the day, with Alex Brink throwing for 37 yards, completing four of 12 passes. Redshirt freshman Gary Rodgers had a strong effort, going 8 for 16 for 83 yards. Cole Morgan was 5 of 9 for 62 yards while Hall completed both of his attempts, totaling 30 yards. Hall also had the longest completion of the day, a 28-yard hookup with Jason Hill.

The running game was led by freshman Woolridge, who rushed nine times for 35 yards. Kevin McCall had five carries for 13 yards while freshman Dwight Tardy had three rushes for 11 yards. In all, eight Cougars carried the ball on the day, all for positive yards.

On the other side of the ball the Cougar defense had another strong effort. Husain Abdullah accounted for two sacks and a tackle-for-loss, while Matt Mullennix registered two sacks with Mkristo Bruce and Paul Stevens accounting for the other two.

The defense held strong in the red zone, stopping the offense three times inside the 20. Willis intercepted an Alex Brink pass in the end zone on the final play of the scrimmage.

Next Saturday's scrimmage (April 8) will also be held in the morning at Martin Stadium.
