Arizona State's Andrew Romine Named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week; Washington's Tim Lincecum Named Pitcher of the Week

April 4, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE sophomore shortstop Andrew Romine has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and WASHINGTON junior right-handed pitcher Tim Lincecum has been named Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 28 - Apr. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Romine, from Lake Forest, Calif., returned to the Sun Devil lineup this weekend after suffering a blood clot in his arm last summer and going through rib removal surgery in January. The sophomore, who had not played baseball since the 2005 College World Series, made his 2006 debut in Arizona State's three-game series at Washington State and in the Challenge at Chase vs. Arizona. For the week, Romine went 7-for-12, knocking in seven runs, including the game-winner on Saturday night in Pullman. Romine had several highlights on the field as well, including a diving stop and throw in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday to preserve the 2-1 win over the Cougars.

Lincecum, from Renton, Wash., threw a nine-inning, complete game two-hitter in the series opener vs. UCLA, striking out a career-high 18 batters, including the first seven to open the game. Lincecum walked only one and allowed only two balls out of the infield. Over his last 32 innings, Lincecum has allowed only one earned run and 10 hits, while striking out 44.

The Player of the Week honor is the first of Romine's career, while it is the 78th such honor for Arizona State. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the sixth for Lincecum since 2004, and the 35th selection all-time for Washington. Lincecum is the first pitcher to be named Conference Pitcher of the Week in two consecutive weeks since Oregon State's Dallas Buck earned two straight awards on May 17 and May 24, 2005.
